What Is Weathering Steel? Applications and Design Details
What is weathering steel?
Weathering steel, often called corten, is known for the patina that develops on its surface under suitable outdoor conditions. The surface gradually takes on orange and brown tones, giving the material its characteristic appearance. COR-TEN® is a trademark; the steel grade and material properties required for a project should be specified technically.
How does the patina develop?
Suitable wetting and drying cycles are needed for the protective surface to develop. Constant moisture, standing water and unsuitable details can adversely affect the expected behaviour. Weathering steel should therefore not be treated as maintenance-free in every environment or as a material that cannot corrode under any conditions.
Applications in architecture and landscape
The natural surface character can be used in panels, screens, planters, decorative objects and landscape elements. Material selection should be considered together with thickness, supporting structures, fixings, drainage and adjacent surfaces. Detailing should account for early rust-coloured runoff so that it does not mark light-coloured paving or finishes.
What information is needed at the start?
- Installation location and indoor or outdoor exposure
- Required dimensions, pattern and purpose
- Drainage, fixing and installation requirements
- Surrounding paving and finishing materials
Corten Türkiye develops planters, screens, architectural panels, decorative products and bespoke applications around project requirements. Material suitability and expectations for the surface should be assessed during design.
